Swimming: The Total Body Workout

Want a Full Body Workout? Consider Swimming

As the winter approaches and the quarantine is driving you crazy, perhaps you’ve found yourself with that nagging thought of how to get in better shape. With COVID, the gym might not be the best option, and working out outside is no longer being considered because of the drop in temperature.

If you feel that these are obstacles you encounter when you work out, maybe swimming could be a fun new way for you to burn some calories and get in better shape in the coming year.

If you do not have a pool in your backyard, now is the perfect time to get started thinking about it so you have it ready as soon as the hot sun sets in. Still, wondering if it’s a good idea? Let us share some of the great benefits of swimming and how it is a total body workout.

Great Cardio Workout

According to Fitness magazine, swimming is a better option than other workouts because not only is swimming a great cardio workout, but it can also double as a strength-training exercise. Getting in shape involves a combination of strength and cardio training; this benefit could save you a lot of time.

An article published by Bucknell University expands on this, saying that the water causes your body to become more buoyant, which means you can perform higher intensity exercises than you could in the gym.

Low Impact

Additionally, swimming is a low-impact workout, which is much better than an alternative such as running. which puts a lot of stress on the knees and other joints.

Burn Calories

Swimming is also an excellent way to burn calories. An article on Livestrong.com, says that swimming at a moderate pace with freestyle stroke for one hour can burn between 472 to 745 calories, and this amount increases if you swim at a faster pace. The same article also says that, due to its low-impact nature, swimming has been shown to cause far fewer injuries than any other sport.

Increase Muscle Flexibility

Medical Daily also cites swimming as an excellent way to increase flexibility. Because of the buoyancy of the water, you can increase your range of motion and flexibility without putting stress on your joints. The article also lists a decrease in disease symptoms such as asthma and diabetes.

Another, perhaps more obvious benefit to swimming, is that you don’t feel sweat while you swim. Although you don’t feel the sweat, you should continue to drink water periodically, however, as you still lose water while you swim.

Saves Money

Perhaps you’re tired of spending money on expensive workout gear. Swimming is an economical exercise choice, which doesn’t require much extra gear. Grab your goggles, swimsuit, and bathing cap, and you’re all set! Remember to start slowly and drink lots of water in between laps before diving headfirst into a swim workout.
