How To Choose The Perfect Spot For a Pool?

Choosing The Perfect Spot For a Pool

“Move the couch over there, by the window.”

“No, that’s too drafty. Move it in front of the TV.”

“Hmmm, that may be too close to the TV… center it on the rug!”

Oh, the joys of finding the perfect placement for your home decor. Even if it is a piece of heavy furniture, we always want it in the perfect spot or will move it around for a change in scenery.

Unfortunately, in regards to your in-ground pool, it is permanent, so it’s important to get it in the perfect spot the first time!

So, How Do You Choose The Perfect Spot?

How do you choose the perfect spot? It may not be as easy as envisioning it from your back patio.

The first thing you will want to do is check with your local city government for zoning regulations. Depending on the rules, you may have to place your pool where they would like it… or so many feet from lines, trees and utility poles.

Once you have narrowed it down to a certain area, you will want to give your installation company the clearance to check your yard for soil types and bedrock. Excessive amounts of underlying rock can hamper the whole project or expose you to expensive blasting costs. Once the land has the clearance for an aquatic oasis, you want to check for:

Sun

Is the pool in a place that will take in adequate sunlight? It can save you on heating costs and make for a more tropical experience!

Water

If the area is low-lying, it may take on rain during the rainy season. The last thing you want is runoff bringing leaves and other foreign materials into your pool.

Wind

Excessively windy areas can not only make swimming chilly but also throw off the balance of the water. This, however, can be an easy fix, as shrubs and bushes can be planted as a wind block.

View

Many prefer their pool to have clear sight lines from the house, so they can keep an eye on swimmers even when they are inside. If you have a view that overlooks the beautiful horizon, an infinity pool can be a great option.

Don’t forget to take into consideration room for the accessories that you may want to add, such as a privacy fence, trees and cooking/lounging areas. This is one of the few things in life that doesn’t have a “do over.” (You can, but it can be super costly!) Putting in a pool is a big decision, so take your time in finding the perfect spot… you will thank yourself later!
