Retaining Wall Designs for In-ground Pools

Retaining walls are used for sloping backyards to add more room. Retaining walls also allow perimeter space around swimming pools and can add to the aesthetics of the entire pool area if properly constructed.

Swimming pool retaining walls could become a disaster for the homeowner if the pool were installed without a wall to divert water. Unfortunately, that means that rainwater and dirt coming off the slope will end up in the swimming pool. A French drain may be used in this case, if necessary, to remediate excess water.

Retaining Wall Ideas

There are two styles of retaining walls, based on their method of construction.

Masonry walls are constructed using poured concrete or concrete block and faced with stone.

Segmented retaining walls are constructed using pre-cast concrete block, and stacked together. Segmented retaining walls are very popular because they are attractive and less expensive compared to masonry walls.

If the yard goes down to a level spot to the pool area, it may be possible to put in a French drain to catch the water before it runs onto the patio. If you have to cut into the yard to install the pool, then this will not be an option for you.

Features

When reviewing retaining wall designs for swimming pools, consider plans where the wall is more than just a wall. An elevated patio is a great idea. Building the wall right on the edge of the pool itself is another option. Including a cascade fountain or two on the wall is also a nice touch. Further, be sure that the retaining wall has enough flat area to be used as seats.

If your property is level, you can still add other features, such as a spa or additional deck spaces. Bushes and other greenery can be placed on top of the retaining wall. The greenery will act as a barrier to blowing leaves and may offer safety by restricting access to areas of the pool.

Costs

What are the costs of retaining walls? Depending on what options you choose, prices can vary widely. Retaining walls are usually priced by square footage, meaning the length and height of the wall will determine costs.

There are extra costs if gravel is needed, and if additional time is required to prepare the ground area. But these costs are much less than the expense of the wall itself. The area for the retaining wall must have enough space to grade the slope so that it’s not too steep.

Costs of segmented walls are determined by sizes and shapes of the blocks used in construction. Walls with varying sizes of blocks are deemed more attractive.
