Tips To Protect Yourself This Summer
Sun’s out; fun’s out! But definitely, time to protect yourself.
When summer approaches it is time to start thinking about all the fun and exciting things to do and start building your calendar. From trips to the beach and lake, barbeques with friends, and good fun relaxing and entertaining in your swimming pool. It’s so exciting to start planning.
But we must never forget summer safety is essential. The summer season, with its warm temperatures and outside activities, can also damage your overall health and wellbeing.
As we know that child safety around water is vital, the sun itself should also be a major concern. Proper protection is crucial because skin naturally is not protected from the harmful sun rays. Do you know that according to the National Cancer Institute, most adults do not wear sunscreen regularly?
Apply Sunscreen
To reduce your odds of being a walking target of the sun, Simply apply an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen to reduce high sun exposure. In addition, wear protective clothing such as hats, long-sleeved shirts, and pants. Yes, there is such thing as SPF clothing. And remember to keep your eyes safe by wearing protective eyewear. Early preparation in the morning before you head out is essential.
Of course, always put on sunscreen before getting into the water. You should put sunscreen on thirty minutes before jumping in and reapplying each time you get out. Just make sure you’re dry before applying! The water can reflect harmful rays onto you, so you’re at a higher risk for burns in the water. Make sure to apply sunscreen on your whole body, not just what’s exposed out of water.
Stay Hydrated
As it is critical to protect your outer body from the sun, your inner body is as vital. This is where hydration comes in. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. No amount is too much. If heading on out for the day, make sure you have enough with you or have easy access to getting it.
You must know the symptoms of dehydration so you can take immediate action. If water is not accessible, other drinks like sports drinks will also work. Just drink whenever you can, even if you are not thirsty.
Avoid Heat Exhaustion
So we have discussed the importance of sun protection and hydration. Another vital safety tip is to avoid heat exhaustion.
The symptoms of heat exhaustion can be heavy sweating and a high pulse. You may even feel tired or sick to your stomach. These are the results your body is telling you to take a break, and it’s time to cool down. Listen to your body.
In extreme heat, move your activities indoors, or schedule them for early morning/late evening to avoid extended exposure.
Watch Prescription Interactions
Are you on prescription medicines? Do you know that the sun can interfere with these and how they process in your body? Have you found yourself reacting to the sun with skin burns and blisters? If so, it may be because of the sun and medicine interaction. Always speak to your medical professional before heading out into the sun for long periods.
The sun is not a bad thing! It is just something you need to be prepared for. It does a body good to take in some Vitamin D, and it does your soul even better. Now get out and enjoy that beautiful pool weather!
